finding humor in epic discomfort

There are a few moments in our lives that cause us to both cringe and laugh at the same time. Let me share a great one with you!

As I sat in the room waiting to meet and speak with my radiation oncologist, I suddenly became aware that I was sweating. The tiny room was warm, but not hot. I hadn't just come from hot yoga. I hadn't eaten spicy food. NOTHING! So why could I feel beads forming on my forehead and my palms getting clammy??? It’s ridiculous. The heavy cardigan I was wearing certainly didn’t help, but come on.

When the doctor finally came in, I was like okay, let’s do this. I pretty much knew what to expect from this appointment, so I thought the sweating would subside. It did not. My doctor paused his presentation and says, “I see you’re sweating, are you okay?” I said, “Yes, I promise I’m okay. I’m just a little warm and I’m the center of attention, so it’s just what happens.” Good grief, I just want this appointment to be finished and now he’s calling attention to my nervous habit that’s completely out of my control. Awesome.

I found some papers that I’d brought with me, turned them into a fan, and told the doctor to please continue. It was so epically funny and humiliating at the same time, all I could do was sit there and fan myself for the next 20 minutes while learning the plan for my radiation treatment. Then as soon as he left the room, I laughed my ass off! I mean, what else can you do?? It’s over. It happened. And now everyone in that room has a funny story to tell. Actually, the doctor and nurse can’t share it, I don’t think. But I can!

Honestly, it brings me so much joy to share this story. Some day, I’ll share the full version. If you’ve seen “Life of the Party” with Melissa McCarthy, you may remember a scene that involves sweating profusely. My appointment was very similar. And it will go down in history as one of the greatest moments in my life.
